Do I Need a Gym?

In order to get stronger and stay uninjured for this marathon, I joined a gym. It’s a boutique gym that does classes. I really like it because the classes are on the smaller side—maximum of 18 people. The focus is on strength and conditioning, not a fast-paced boot camp that kills you, and is more stressful ( for me anyways).

Because I will do a workout—I just need someone to tell me what to do. My first week was fun! Of course, I was trying to figure everything out: the class setup, the language used for exercises, etc. I was moderately sore too, so I thought, Good, I worked, but not too hard. This will be great! I’ll get stronger too.

Starting out, I think I can do everything... well, let’s just say I was humbled. The gym says, “Do ten reps.” I’m like, “Oh, I can do... three. ”At first, I was doing nothing right. My form was all wanky. And I have worked out before—it’s not like I’m completely green. It’s just been a few years. Thank goodness the trainer is patient and helpful. If I didn’t have this goal, I might have given up—because I suck and can’t do it. I had to reframe my mindset and remember why I’m doing this.

I can get caught up in the moment and compare myself to others. I’m sure we all do that. It’s just reminding yourself over and over not to compare. Bring yourself back to your goal, and where you’re coming from. Where did you start? Then you realize—WOW, I’m doing really well!!Yay me!!

Focusing on my “why” for these workouts has been awesome! I push when I can and ease off when I have to. I did start three months ago, and I have a good routine going with them now.

There are things I can’t do—like a push-up or a chin-up. I just do what I can, and I know I’m building strength anyway. The point is to help me not get injured for this marathon. When I keep my “why” first in my head, I win every time.

Just keep moving. Don’t give up.
